Automotive Linux

Saturday October 23, 2004
Linux offers a lot of advantages as an operating system for the automotive market, but had some shortcomings as a real time operating system (RTOS) with respect to boot time, determinism and power consumption. To overcome these barriers, Metrowerks developed an automotive grade Linux technology that can be used for automotive Telematics applications (applications that integrate wireless communications, vehicle monitoring systems and location devices). The technology features sub-40 millisecond response time for in-vehicle bus communication, high performance, real-time capabilities, and very low power consumption. Supported architectures include: Freescale MPC500, MPC5500, HC12, HC08, MGT5100, MPC5200, MAC7111, 56F8345 (Hybrid), 56F8346 (Hybrid); Texas Instruments TMS470; NEC V850; and Infineon C16x.
