German Railway Switches to Linux

The Deutsche Bahn, which runs the German railway system, is migrating its servers to Linux. It plans to have more than 300 Linux servers operational by the end of 2004. The Deutsche Bahn is replacing IBM Mainframes, Windows, Solaris, and HP servers with a standardized infrastructure based on Linux running on Intel servers and mainframes. The move is part of a short-term cost-saving plan and should be completed by 2007. The migration is focusing initially on multi-platform applications, like SAP, Lotus Notes, and HP Non-Stop applications. About half of the organizations 55,000 Lotus Notes users are handled by Linux servers after some the Solaris email servers have been migrated.
