Study Confirms Low Linux Cost of Ownership
Friday December 17, 2004
A recent IDC study investigated the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of Linux on Intel servers compared with Unix on RISC servers for Internet/intranet/extranet and collaborative workloads. The study shows a 5.5 times higher TCO for Unix/RISC for collaborative workloads and a 1.8 times higher TCO for Unix/RISC for Internet/intranet/extranet workloads. The study is based on interviews with seven North American and European companies that moved their server platforms to various Red Had Linux versions running on IBM xSeries Intel based servers with IBM middleware (WebSphere, etc.). Payback of the initial investment in hardware and software was often achieved in less than three months. For more information see ameinfo.com news.
