Powerful Linux-Java Platform for Mobile Phones

MontaVista and Esmertec team up to combine embedded Linux platform with high-performance Java for mobile phones and other consumer electronics devices. MontaVista’s Linux, Consumer Electronics Edition, supports networking, power management, streaming media optimizations, as well as "execute in place" capability, while Esmertic’s Jbed provides a wireless multitasking J2ME-platform and a powerful object-oriented software and development platform, called OSVM. The collaboration promises to develop an open, scalable, standards-based mobile software platform for wireless devices. As the market for mobile phones has been expanding rapidly, the time may be right for a new generation of Linux-Java enhanced handsets. Mobile phone sales for 2005 are projected to exceed 700 million units. Read more…
