Saturday April 30, 2005
Orion Multisystems is offering a desk side supercomputer with up to 96 processors. It is about the size of two regular tower cases and consumes less than 1500 Watts.
All 96 computing nodes of the system can be turned on simultaneously with a single on-off switch. The nodes are organized on eight boards with 12 nodes on each board. The x86 type processors are running at 1.2 gigahertz. The operating system is Fedora Linux with modified kernel 2.6.6.
The system is used by engineers, geologists, biologists, finance mathematicians, and other scientists.
In addition to separate DVD and hard disk drives, each node can be expanded with a hard disk to yield a grand total of up to 9.6 terabyte of disk space.
