OS/2 Doesn’t Want To Die

IBM has tried to kill OS/2 for some time. The operating system, originally developed by IBM as response to Microsoft’s Windows operating system for personal computers, never made it big. However, a small but dedicated user community convinced IBM to continue minimal support. Now that IBM decided to terminate all support and marketing of OS/2 by the end of next year, supporters are preparing petitions for IBM to release the OS/2 code under an Open Source license, so that the user community can continue development and support. Since it will not be possible to release the complete code base of OS/2 due to various licensing issues, IBM is asked to specify, which parts of the code would be excluded from publishing, so that the user community can rewrite those parts as open source.
