Xubuntu

Monday June 19, 2006
The name says it all: Xubuntu is Ubuntu with the XFCE desktop front end attached to it. Following the growing popularity of Ubuntu, we have already seen the variants Kubuntu, the KDE version, and Edubuntu for young people. Now the latest variant, Xubuntu, has been released.

The only difference between Xubuntu and the other Ubuntus is the XFCE desktop environment, the key advantage of XFCE over Gnome or KDE being that it is lighter and faster, which makes it particularly well suited for older or low-end computers. As a lightweight desktop, XFCE does not pack all of the features for example of the KDE desktop, but it comes surprisingly close.

Xubuntu actually uses the 4.3.90.1 beta version of XFCE and still has a few rough edges, which hopefully will be smoothed out in future releases. Read more.
