Linux Kernel Developer's Laptop Computer Battery Explodes

Everyone nowadays is aware of the dangers of virus infections and similar virtual hazards posed by computer activity. Unfortunately there also real physical threats. In particular, laptop batteries, designed to store large quantities of energy can cause damage through fire or explosions if manufactured or treated improperly. Well known Linux developer Alan Cox recently experienced such a case first hand.

On September 22, 2006, the battery of his IBM ThinkPad 600 exploded causing serious damage and minor injuries. The injuries were inflicted despite the fact that Alan was several feet away from the device when it exploded. The battery was bought from a third party and may not have been genuine IBM.
