The developers of OpenMoko have set up the web site OpenMoko.com as the initial place to order the OpenMoko mobile phone, FIC Neo1973. The device is available in two versions, one of which is aimed at developers. The framework of this phone is based completely on open standards. It has a 2.8 inch touchscreen with a resolution of 640x480 pixels. It features GPS capabilities, quad-band GSM/GPRS, and USB network emulation for linking a PC to the Internet via the phones cellular network connection.

OpenMoko is a Linux platform for smart phones that makes mobile systems as open as the PC. The OpenMoko framework includes the latest Linux software, from Kernel 2.6 with suitable drivers, over graphical front ends, to applications and package management. It comes with some 3,000 applications. Common storage models and libraries for developers are available as well.

The Neo1973 is shipped with an email/text messaging client, a phonebook, and media player. Many additional applications can be downloaded, and software developers can write and install their own programs. The Neo1973 uses a 266 MHz Samsung processor with 128MB of RAM and 64MB of flash memory and includes an 512MB MicroSD card. The device is priced at around $300 for the base model, and $450 for the developer version. For more information see here.

BUT the current version is unstable, and should be acquired only by developers (because end-users will probably never be able to use it).
Wait for the next version (christmas, if all goes well) before rushing in it… It will even feature WiFi and motion sensors :-)
