Wal-Mart Sells out $200 Linux Computer in 48 Hours

Sunday November 18, 2007
A few weeks ago Wal-Mart announced the availability of a $200 computer, namely the "Green gPC" produced by the Taiwanese manufacturer Everex. The Green gPC runs the new Linux distribution gOS, which is based on the popular desktop Linux distro Ubuntu, but has been modified to emphasize Google Web sites and applications, such as Gmail, Google Docs, and YouTube.

The Green gPC uses an energy efficient processor from VIA Technologies and comes with 512 MB of memory. A 80 GB hard disk drive and a DVD/CD drive are included as well. The $200 price does not include a monitor.

The Green gPC was stocked for online purchasing and at about 600 stores. Online, the gPC was sold out in 48 hours. However, more units are on the way. So there is still hope for those who want to get their hands on this inexpensive, yet easy to use home computer.

This should be an object lesson to all those who believe that MS is both God and their high priced boxes heed the MS brand of OS to satisfy the public that they are not toys.

More power to the folks who believe in open source.

Hopefully computers using the Linux OS will become serious competition to two popular computers. Let’s not forget Jobs has always sought the dominance that Gates has achieved. Regardless what the new lame Mac TV commercials want us to believe.

Don’t forget that Wal-Mart has also sought the dominance that Gates achieved, with equally legitimate tactics. If we are to continue searching for cheap computers with Linux, Wal-Mart will be there to provide them at a profit. Where do you want your hard-earned shekels to go? I prefer giving to the little guy, keep small businesses in business.
