LinMin Bare Metal Provisioning - A Tool for Remotely Installing Linux Systems

Tuesday March 11, 2008
LinMin has released a software package for efficiently deploying, repurposing, backing up, and restoring Linux installations and other systems. The LinMin Bare Metal Provisioning (LBMP) system enables IT departments to streamline and simplify the process of installing the latest versions of Linux on multiple client computers.

The client computers, which receive a new operating system (OS) installation, don't need to have an OS installed at the time of the provisioning. The only requirements are that they are connected via a local area network (LAN) on the same subnet, and that they have PXE firmware in the BIOS to be bootable from the network.

LBMP allows you to select from a number of operating systems, and to set a list of application software packages to be pre-installed. You can quickly and safely backup the whole system, temporarily install a completely different system, and revert back to the previous version if necessary.

LBMP offers significant advantages in terms of pricing and usability compared to alternative solutions. A license for provisioning up to 10 client systems is $100 per year, whereas with a $750 per year subscription you can manage up to 250 client systems. For more information see here.
