Gnash - Free Open Source Flash Movie Player

Friday March 6, 2009
Gnash is one of a handful of projects on the Free Software Foundation's high priority list. This is a list of projects for developing software packages for which there are currently no fully functional free alternatives. Gnash is intended to become a free software version of the Adobe Flash Player. It is the only free flash/shockwave player that supports most SWF v7 features and some SWF v8 and v9 features. It can be used as a standalone program to play flash movies or it can be run as a Firefox plugin.

Since Adobe only provides an official Flash player for x86 processor based Linux systems, there is a need for providing a player for other processor architectures. Unlike the Adobe player, which is released only in binary form, the open source Gnash project can be compiled and run on many more architectures, including AMD64, MIPS/Irix, PowerPC, and BSD based systems.

Gnash is distributed under the GNU General Public License. It is based on GameSWF, which is also public domain software. The development of Gnash is being led by Rob Savoye. Volunteers are welcome to participate in this and other GNU projects.
