The official release of Amarok 2.2 is probably another month away, but the first beta version is now available. One of the highlights of the new version is the capability to freely define the layout of the user interface components, which includes superimposing components, and using tabs to bring components to the foreground.
New components have been added, including a videoclip applet for searching for video clips on the Internet and playing them. There is also a new photo applet for displaying the photos of the artists whose music is currently playing. More information and download links can be found on the Amarok 2.2 Beta 1 page.
Amarok is a feature rich, state-of-the-art audio player for Linux and integrates with KDE 4. One of Amarok’s strengths is its ability to manage large music collections, allowing you to keep track of and select files in a variety of ways. You can generate file trees organized by year, genre, artist or album, and you can search for specific titles. This software includes tools for transferring music to an iPod, and for playing and burning CDs. A "context" browser displays information about the track currently being played, including cover image and lyrics.
