OpenVPN is an Open Source VPN (Virtual Private Network) solution. VPN software creates a private communications network that may operate over a public network such as the Internet. The communication protocols of the VPN ensure that the communication remains private and secure. VPN uses the SSL (Secure Socket Layer)/TLS (Transport Layer Security) libraries for its crytographic layer.
OpenVPN distinguishes itself from other VPN products by its simple installation procedures. It provides clients for Linux, Windows, Solaris, MacOSX, and BSD. Some VPN solutions feature "clientless" architectures using simple Web browsers. However, client programs such as those provided by OpenVPN provide better security and better functionality.
The OpenVPN Access Server can be downloaded from the OpenVPN web site. It includes a web-based administration user interface for configuration and server management; a OpenVPN client with graphical user interface; a client web server for generating a client configuration and a Windows VPN client software installer.
The community version can be downloaded free of charge.
