Subsonic is an advanced, well maintained Java-based media streamer, whose main functionality is to provide a server that plays your music and makes it available for you to play and listen anywhere on the internet. It is accessed with an internet browser and generally does not require a client software installation.
The software provides options to select songs remotely and browse extensive media libraries. Besides playing songs and movies, you can use it for podcast listening or viewing, and for retrieving lyrics, cover art, and other song information. Apps are available for Android devices and iPhones. Multiple logins are supported.
SubSonic is compatible with all common audio and video formats designed for streaming over HTTP, including OGG and AAC, and can be extended to other formats, such as WMA, FLAC, and WavPack, using transcoder plug-ins.
The software is freely available under the GPL license. For more information see the project web site.
