Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

Definition: Uniform Resource Locator (URL): One of two basic kinds of Universal Resource Identifiers (URI), a string of characters that precisely identifies an Internet resource's type and location. For example, the following fictitious URL identifies a World Wide Web document (http : / /), indicates the domain name of the computer on which it is stored (www.wolverine. virginia .eau), fully describes the document's location within the directory structure (~toros/winerefs/), and includes the document's name and extension (merlot.html). http:// www.wolverine.virglnia.edu/~toros/winerefs/merlot.html See Relative URL (RELURL).
