"root-portal"

By Juergen Haas, About.com

Definition: root-portal: Monitors the system and displays the results on the desktop Originally intended to provide a tail -f into the root-window, it is now also able to monitor pipes, sub-processes, system load, network usage and the names of opening/closing processes. This data can optionally be put through regex filters and search/replaces. Monitors can be run on remote systems through a remote shell such as ssh.
