Definition: /etc: The directory on UNIX where the majority of the configuration information is kept. It is roughly analogous to the Windows registry. Of particular interest is /etc/passwd file that stores all the passwords. Key point: If an intruder can read files from this directory, then they can likely use the information to attack the machine.
