If, after reviewing the pros and cons, you decided to give Linux a try in your organization, as desktop systems and/or in the server room, it may be a good idea to obtain the services of a "Linux guru". You may be surprised that people with thorough Linux system administration skills are often more affordable than you might expect. Because good Linux people are in this field primarily due to their intense interest in the technology, they are typically self trained with thorough knowledge of all aspects of Linux systems, including networking. They are also often familiar with other operating systems, such as MS Windows and Mac operating systems, as well as other UNIX operating systems. This means, if you find the right person you can hit several birds with one bullet.
Self-motivated Linux experts are also knowledgable about Open Source software. They know where to find and how to install free yet useful replacements of expensive software packages, and will be happy to train their colleagues in the neighboring cubicles. Keep in mind, however, that many Linux gurus do not care much about formal certifications. While there are good training programs out there, requiring a certification in a job description, however, may backfire, as Linux administrators with certifications may actually not have the level of expertise you are looking for.
