Nexus One

Google's First Mobile Phone

By , About.com Guide

The smartphone Nexus One went on sale at the end of 2009 and has generally received positive reviews. It compares favorably with Apple's iPhone but initially didn't have the multi-touch functionality that lets you zoom in and out for example by touching the screen with two fingers and moving the contact points in different directions. This was fixed after Google released a software update which adds the multi-touch functionality and other improvements.

The update also fixed reception problems that occurred in the initial version. One of the innovations of the device is a search application called Goggles, which performs searches and operations based on camera input. There is a night mode, and marked elements and search suggestions are synchronized with the desktop version of Google Maps. Updates can be downloaded through the mobile phone network.

The Nexus One is Google's first mobile phone. It runs Google's mobile device operating system Android, which is a Linux operating system (OS).

It has roughly the same shape as the iPhone but is even slimmer and has a higher resolution touchscreen (800 x 400 pixels). The camera takes 5 megapixel photos and records videos with 720x480 resolution. Complete specifications can be found on the Nexus One web site.

The unlocked Nexus One is $529. However, if you sign up for a two-year service contract with T-Mobile USA you can get it for $179.
