Linux Game: Dirt Bike

About.com Rating 4

From Andre Haas

In this game, you are a dirt biker, and you must advance through several missions. Each of these missions is a challenge, especially to beginners. But they are all fun. You can compare your scores with friends who also play, as well as submit them on line to see your status among players around the world.

Gameplay

The gameplay is very simple, because the game is controlled by four keys. The up and down keys accelerate and decelerate; the left and right ones make your driver lean to one side or the other, to prevent you from landing on your head after a jump. The controls are quite sensitive, which adds the difficulty of maneuvering through the bumpy obstacle courses for many players. However, you can quickly learn this game. It soon becomes fun, instead of frustrating.

Graphics and Audio

The obstacle courses are very nice, with professional-quality tires, boards, and other miscellanies. Your dirt bike and its rider are both very realistic. The audio is simple, consisting of a few revs and vrooms. However, that doesn't matter much, as this game requires way too much concentration to include music.

Special Feature

The most interesting part of this game is the physics engine. While jumping, your bike will usually start to tilt in one direction. If you don't take any immediate action, the bike will flip over and kill you. However, with slight taps of the keys, you can eventually stabilize it again and ensure a safe landing. Though there are many other games that have good physics engines, Dirt Bike is probably the best example.

Bottom Line

You will love this game if you are an extreme biker or dirt biker. Even if you are not, you may still appreciate the awesome physics of the game. Although only the most skilled players can beat this game, almost everyone will find it fun. This is great for kids, who can spend hours trying to get through all the missions. Adults, who are more aware of their human limitations, will have to summon a bit determination in order to keep trying.
