Linux Game: Unreal Tournament

About.com Rating 4.5

From Andre Haas

There are two versions of this game: Basic and full. Unreal Tournament 2003 is basically a fast paced shooter in the like of the Quake series. Grab a gun, maybe a vehicle too, and go. Everything is well made, from the big grassy mountains to the terrorizing assault tanks. Not much to say, except that you should learn how to use the weapons. The game usually costs between 10 and 20 U.S. Dollars, but it is well worth it. A free demo is available.

Gameplay

You just grab a gun, follow the crowd into war. Run around, shoot a bit, blast a vehicle, die, and re-spawn. There are tons of terrorizing weapons, including a chain gun, able to blast in two different speeds, one slightly slower than the other. Another interesting weapon is the strange, anti-personnel rocket launcher, which locks on infantry and then can fire either one or three missiles at the target. I would say that it is almost impossible for your enemies to flee after your attack has launched a three-pack of doom. The best and the most unique weapon of all is the legendary Redeemer, which is a miniature atomic rocket launcher. Launch it at an enemy base. A few seconds later, see it explode in a flash of light. The coolest part is that if you find a redeemer on top of a tower, where they often are, and launch it, the rocket travels so slowly that it can take over 20 seconds to arrive. If you are a good player, you can see the missile coming and can run away before it arrives.

Graphics and Audio

The graphics, which is one the best aspects of this game, are simply awesome. Realistic mountains, cool-looking vehicles, and, of course, the awesome look of the weapons, all are a plus in the game. The audio is very good, full of sound effects and music when you really need them. I would say that the graphics are absolutely superb and the audio impressive, too.

Special Feature

I think the best part about Unreal Tournament 2003 is the map design. The maps look spectacular, with just the right amount of details. The textures look so real that you’d feel that you are brushing against them. It is details like these that make the Unreal gaming atmosphere so much fun. Players can also customize their bodies extensively. You will have all types of bodies if you purchase the full game.

Bottom Line

If you have the money, and you love the Quake series, get this one. Or at least give the free demo a try first. With superb graphics, impressive audio, and extremely good gameplay, it is an FPS lover's dream. Note that if you have an older computer, the graphics will have to be turned down a few notches in order to get the game working.
