The following is a selection of Linux based graphics and image editing software. Applications with free versions (indicated as [Free]) are listed before commercial programs. Note: Freeware and GNU Library General Public License often come with restrictions. Users should check copyright and licensing statements from the developers.

DuhDraw [Free]
DuhDraw for Linux is very much like TheDraw for DOS, which is used to draw ANSI screens, login screens, and mud screens. Platform: Linux.

Giftrans [Free]
Giftrans converts any GIF file into a GIF89a and can be used for setting the transparent or background color, changing colors, adding or removing comments. Also provides code to analyze GIF contents. Platform: Linux / Unix.

GNU Ghostscript & Ghostview [Free]
Ghostscript outputs postscript and PDF files to a wide variety of display and printing devices, and to several other graphics formats. Ghostview is an X11 user interface for Ghostscript, allowing you to view and navigate PostScript files. Platform: Linux / Unix.

GIMP [Free]
GIMP (GNU/General Image Manipulation Program) is a free, robust, powerful image manipulation program suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. Platform: Linux / Unix (X11 required).

GMT - Generic Mapping Tools [Free]
A collection of approximately 60 Unix tools that let the user manipulate (x,y) and (x,y,z) data to produce Encapsulated PostScript File (EPS) illustrations. Functions include filtering, trend fitting, gridding, and projecting. Platform: Linux / Unix.

ImageMagick [Free]
A collection of tools for image conversion, annotation, composition, animation, and creating montages. It allows the user to read, write, and manipulate over 87 major image formats (e.g., GIF, JPEG, PNG, PDF, TIFF, PhotoCD). Platform: Linux / Unix.

Photogenics
Photogenics is a graphics package that allows you to create images, either from scratch or by modifying existing pictures. It can be used for everything from simple file conversion to advanced photo manipulation and retouching. It also offers realistic and easy-to-use media such as pencils, chalk, and watercolours. Platform: Linux, PocketPC, Windows.

PicBook
PicBook turns your images into a photo album in HTML format. It comes with automatic image processing, slideshow, transition effects, etc. It is easy to customize with a configuration file and HTML-templates. Platform: Linux / Unix.

Xfig [Free]
XFIG is an interactive drawing tool. Platform: Linux / Unix (X11R4 or later required).

XPaint [Free]
XPaint is a simple paint program for X. It is good at producing simple graphics, but also offers advanced features such as image processing functions and gradient fill. Platform: Linux / Unix.

XV [Shareware]
xv is an interactive image manipulation program for the X Window System. It works with images in many formats, including GIF, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, X11 bitmap and more. It can also generate PostScript files. Platform: Linux / Unix.

Pixel!FX (PFX)
A Unix imaging and scanning product line from Mentalix offering powerful, full-featured image scanning, editing, viewing, printing, compression and decompression, and optical character recognition software. Platform: Linux / Unix.
