my choices
- PCLinuxOS, PinguyOS, Mint are my choices for modern machines. I can not say enough about Puppy for older machines.

Ubuntu
- I really like Ubuntu's installer it has the ability to install itself along Windows without the need to partition hard drives. I don't really like the Unity GUI though and have dropped it for Gnome Shell 3.2.

- Kubuntu has gotten better every release. It has features not yet in MS Windoze.

LMDE
- Linux Mint Debian Edition. I've been using Fedora since FC9 but never got along with it since they switched to Gnome 3. I avoided Debian-based distros due to familiarity with Red Hat-based distros (we use RHEL at work) but eventually Fedora's ugly and buggy implementation of Gnome 3 and the crashing of the Gnome Shell several times a day made me take the plunge. I tried a few distros before LMDE but as soon as I installed it I knew it was the one for me. Installation was so easy and, unlike other distros I've used like Fedora, CentOS, and recently, Debian, nearly everything I needed was already there and just worked out of the box eg. MP3 and DVD support, Libre Office, Firefox, Thunderbird, Banshee, etc. I just copied my app config files over from the old home directory, installed a few other essentials like Bluefish and VMPlayer and hey presto - rock solid stability and so easy to use. I can't see me using anything else for long time....

- The best Gnu-Linux for me is the Mandriva. I'm using the version of 2008 because of the former 3's KDE version. I don't like the 4's versions. Mandriva is my favourite O.S. sice it was called Mandrake. Other Linux I like: Red Hat, Suse, Slackware, Debian.

Kubuntu
- Originally Mandrake which became Mandrivia then Kubuntu. For a time Mint but it was tkaing too long for the KDE version so I went back to Kubuntu. I do worry that bad thing will happen in the future with Kubuntu. If it does I will have to look for another KDE implemation.

Fedora
- There are a lot of distributions I like, Fedora for devel and SliTaz (starting from the web) for fun. Mint is better for people migrating from MS to Linux

Linux - favourite versions
- I am a MS database developer, but my main PC is a System-76 laptop running Ubuntu 11.10. Lots of unhappy things have been said about Unity - I find it strange, but not impossible. Certainly very different to Mint 11 that I run in a VM on it, because I like it's simplicity! I've been using Ubuntu on an eeeBox for about 18 months, and it's been very reliable and well matched to the limited power of the little box.

Mageia
- Mageia 1 KDE. Nice, slick and easy KDE4 implementation. Next one could be Xubuntu.

- I've try most and hate them all so far, cuz they won't play dvd's out or in of the box, but I' kind-da like Ubuntu with gmome 2 not 3, but still looking...Super os its old, ultimate edition 3, brasero doesn't work as it should and mint has ugly colors, getting a dvd player is not the answer.

- So far I find Mint 11 most practical. I'm using 12 to keep abreast of development, but it is still buggy, just as is the parent Ubuntu distro. 12 has the advantages of greater apps choices and is slightly faster, but the clock/calendar is incomplete forcing one to use an app. So far no way to put icons on the task bar, no "favorites box, and some freeze-ups right after update in the 64 bit version. I'll probably like the April release more.

Mint
- I used Debian for a few years but have had a lot of kernel oops with Squeeze and printing problems, so moved to Mint 10 and haven't looked back. I moved to Mint 11 now because I reported a bug to OpenOffice which caused many problems with a spreadsheet app I wrote and they never addressed the problem; Mint 11 includes LibreOffice which works fine. Actually if it wasn't for the insecurity Windows 7 is pretty smooth(!) except the insistence to mix user folders into the system heirarchy and all on the same partition. And all the effort to avoid their unfathomable permissions. As for Linux why have the main 2 desktops made such a mess of transition to their next versions?

Linux my versions
- openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise First version I tried that worked without tweaking, and rarely needs any changes other than periodic auto managed updates.

- Debian or the Ubuntu LTS releases work well for my desktop. What I like about both of these distros... Deb package tools have been stable, reliable, and easy to use. Lots of software available in the repositories. Active communities for online support. Live cd's are useful for system repair. A variety of desktop environments to choose from.
